Hungarian Felvers were first bred in the Austro-
Hungarian Empire as horses of war. A blend of English
and French Thoroughbreds, native Hungarian mares,
and Shagya Arabians produced the most sought-after
horse in Europe prior to WWII. For example, Alois
Podhajsky rode "Teja" , a Hungarian Felver, to introduce
high level dressage to Britain and Ireland in 1949.
The Thoroughbred, Selle Francias, Trakehner, Shagya
Arabian and Felver all share some bloodlines.
As WWII drew to a close the breeding programs in
Europe were nearly destroyed. In 1945 and 1946 the
U.S Army brought about 200 horses from Hungary to
the USA as "spoils of war" for their Remounts.
However, the horses were sold at auction in 1949 when
the Army disbanded the Cavalry. Under the guidance of
two Hungarian Countesses, some of those horses, along
with a few others imported from Hungary, were kept
and bred to preserve the breed. Today, the Felver is a
rare breed at about 2000 worldwide. But due to their
strong genetics and careful breeding they continue to be
an exceptional sport horse.
These horses range in size from 15.2 - 16.2 hh. They
have a generous girth and good bone and feet. They
are known for their soundness, athleticism, and steady
temperament.
The quality of the breed itself, combined with the natural
pasture and outdoor environment we provide for them,
results in a gifted, sound and brave horse. They are
ideal for Sport and pleasure.
